Week 17: Rebellion during World War 1

This week we will examine how critiques of Empire developed during the First World War. During the War, rebellions erupted across the Empire; Singapore, Ceylon, Nyasaland, Nigeria, and Ireland will be the principal case studies.

Seminar Questions:

1) Why did the First World War coincide with an eruption of resistance across the British Empire?

2) Were approaches to resistance locally contingent?
