Week 18: The Development of Nationalist Movements, 1918-1960
Nationalist movements gained strength across the British Empire during the twentieth century. This week, we will examine political writings, speeches, and literature to interrogate how visions of independence developed and were negotiated.
Seminar Questions:
1) How did the discourse and demand for political independence emerge?
2) How did political leaders and intellectuals conceptualise anti-colonialism? What vision of independence was being advanced?
3) How did elites facilitate the transition from 'critiques of aspects of colonial rule' to 'critiques of colonialism as a system'?
