Week 8: Representing and Remembering Resistance

For the final week of this unit, we will be considering the legacies of enslaved resistance. The lecture will discuss ongoing forms of resistance in the immediate aftermath of abolition, with a particular focus on the Morant Bay Rebellion.

In the seminar, we will consider how enslaved resistance has been remembered and immortalised through time. We will discuss public memory, commemoration and heritage, as well as literary representations of resistance.

Seminar Questions

1) Whose responsibility is it to commemorate slavery?

2) How is enslaved resistance commemorated and memorialised today?
