Week 9: Early Colonisation and Company Rule, 1600-1857

This week will set the broad context for Unit 2. It will lay out how the East India Company had gained control over much of the sub-continent from 1600 onwards. We will pay particular attention to the seeds of discontent and early modes of resistance that occurred in the century preceding 1857.

2) What do the EIC's campaigns against thuggee and sati tell us about early EIC rule?

2) Why did Indian soldiers take part in the Vellore Mutiny of 1806?
