LN313 Undergraduate Translation Project

Module Code: LN313-15 OR LN313-30
Module Name: Undergraduate Translation Project
Module Coordinator: Dr Qian Liu

15 CATS: Term 1 only (NOT AVAILABLE 2023-24)

30 CATS: Term 1 and Term 2

Module Credits: 15 / 30 (see below)

Module prerequisites

NB. For 2023-24, this module will run ONLY as a 30-CAT full-year module.

These two modules (the 15 CATS version LN313-15 which runs in term 1, and the 30 CATS version LN313-30 which runs for the full academic year) are only open to final-year students who have previously taken a Translation and Transcultural Studies (TTS) culture module* at Year 1 or Intermediate level during their studies at Warwick and who have obtained at least 2:1 in their assessment for that module.

*LN102 OR LN312. Please note, this does NOT refer to translation in language classes.

Module Description

This module offers final-year students an opportunity to develop their own translation project autonomously, with the support of a language-specific supervisor and the module convenor. By completing their own independent translation project, students will be able to advance their critical understanding of the processes and challenges of translation, as well as their analytical writing and translation skills. The module will allow students to

  • develop awareness of the various challenges associated with translating different text types and genres
  • critically reflect on translation practice
  • critically engage with theoretical literature to support arguments
  • develop a capacity for independent study and self-directed inquiry and research
  • develop further key transferable skills including effective communication, self-motivation, self-reliance, problem-solving, and time and information management.

Whether you are opting to take this module for 15 or 30 CATS, there are two routes that you can choose from for your project.

Route 1 is a practice route. You produce your own translation work and reflect analytically on your translation strategy.

Route 2 allows you to reflect critically on published translation work.

N.B. LN313 may be taken either as a 15-CAT term 1 module, OR a 30-CAT full-year module. In term 1, all students taking this module (whether for 15- or 30-CATs) will participate in the centrally taught sessions.
