SMLC Undergraduate Job and Volunteering Opportunities

If you are looking for ways to improve your CV, gain transferable workplace skills and personal development opportunities then look no further than the student roles we have on offer in the SMLC. There are three roles available:

SMLC Volunteer Language Ambassadors: volunteering for three hours total in term 1 or 2 in a local school in the MFL classroom to support pupils’ language learning.
SMLC Widening Participation Ambassadors: paid roles working at various schools’ outreach events held on campus throughout the year.
SMLC Student Ambassador - Recruitment: paid roles working to promote SMLC’s recruitment activities such as Open Days and Offer Holder Days.

SMLC Volunteer Language Ambassadors

There are two recruitments points, October for term 1 volunteering and January for term 2. Students volunteer for 3 hours in a school supporting MFL teaching, often work in pairs with a partner ambassador.

What is involved? Who can apply? When can I apply? Why should I apply?

Schools nationally are struggling to persuade students to study a language at GCSE and A-level so this is an excellent way to give something back, act as a role model for young people, raise aspirations and promote social mobility. Finally it goes without saying that this experience is an excellent addition to your CV and also counts as points towards the Warwick Award and is added to your HEAR (Higher Education Achievement Record)

SMLC Widening Participation Ambassadors

These are paid roles through Unitemps at £12/per hour (correct as of 07/24) to work during schools' outreach events organised throughout the year through the Routes into Languages West Midlands network run by Warwick SMLC.

What is involved?

Who can apply? When can I apply?

These roles will be advertised via email to all students at least one month ahead of the event date. The email will explain the event type, timings and languages required and include a sign-up form. Most events require a full day commitment. Students can sign up to express an interest in working and will be selected based on the specific requirements of each event. Once selected they will be required to complete the Unitemps registration process.

SMLC Student Ambassador - Recruitment

These are paid roles through Unitemps at £12/per hour (correct at 07/24) primarily to deliver high quality support to the School’s Student Recruitment/Admissions team, although Ambassadors may sometimes be asked to provide support to other events/activities.

What is involved? Who can apply?

As this role requires Ambassadors to have a knowledge of studying at Warwick, initially, applications are welcome from intermediate students who are not on a year abroad and finalists.

When selecting Student Ambassadors for events, we look at various criteria so please do not be disappointed if we don’t include you for events initially; you will still remain on our list and we will contact you if we think you are suited for a particular activity. Examples of things we consider:

degree combinations - we need to ensure that we can cover all the languages and subjects in our degrees
modules – we may need students who have done particular modules
a range of year abroad activities/plans
any extracurricular activities that you are involved in
evidence of good attendance and engagement with your programme
future plans after graduation
protected characteristics
staff recommendation
