PhD funding opportunities in Modern Languages

Are you thinking of pursuing a PhD in German, French, Italian or Hispanic Studies? The School of Modern Languages and Cultures at the University of Warwick, UK, invites applications for the university’s annual funding competition for doctoral students.




Success in National Student Survey results

Impressive scores were achieved by several languages within Warwick's School of Modern Languages and Cultures in the latest National Student Survey. German Studies was awarded an exceptional 96% overall satisfaction score, while French Studies scored 93%. Commenting on the overall results, the Vice-Chancellor Professor Nigel Thrift said: 'This success reflects our commitment to provide Warwick students with a high-quality research-led learning experience, that also equips them to become internationally aware and to leave Warwick inspired and equipped to take on some of our world’s greatest challenges. It also reflects Warwick’s continued reinvestment in its campus to provide the experience that our students expect.'

Modern Languages rise in 2015 Complete University Guide

The Modern Languages subjects at Warwick achieved some impressive rankings in the 2015 Complete University Guide, published 12 May 2014. French moved up one place to 3rd, and now sits above Cambridge and just behind Oxford. German moved up to 5th position, on the heels of Oxford, Cambridge, and Exeter. Italian is in 7th position, on equal footing with St. Andrew’s. Our new Department of Hispanic Studies does not yet feature in these tables.


New Professor of German appointed

The Department of German Studies is pleased to announce the appointment of Mary Cosgrove as Professor of German Studies from January 2015


New collection of essays published on German and European Orientalism, edited by James Hodkinson

Warwick scholar Dr James Hodkinson, together with colleagues from his Occident-Orient Research Network, have published a volume of essays on the the still under-researched theme of Germanic, central and eastern European forms of Orientalism during the long nineteenth century.

Warwick ranked 3rd in world in latest top 50 under 50 table

The latest QS World University Rankings table of universities that are under 50 years old, published on Tuesday 11 June 2013, has once again placed the University of Warwick at 3rd in the world. This also makes it the highest ranked European university.

Joint Warwick/Monash PhD Programme: Funding Available!

Warwick university is blazing a trail in working with other universities internationally to extend the reach and quality of our research, the scope of our teaching and the opportunities we can offer students and staff alike. Warwick is cooperating closely with Monash University in Melbourne Australia. The Department of German Studies at Warwick already has connections with German at Monash. Languages at Warwick rated 26th in the world

In the latest annual QS World University Rankings by Subject, modern languages at Warwick are collectively rated 26th in the world. This places them above similar offerings in the universities of Cornell, Duke, Manchester, and King’s College London.
