About
Raquel Navas is an Assistant Professor in Hispanic Studies and joined Warwick in 2014. Before that, she worked as a language tutor in Spanish and Catalan at the University of Birmingham and taught Spanish language and culture at Aston University.
Raquel took her degree in Hispanic Philology at the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona and she successfully completed the postgraduate courses in Spanish and Catalan as foreign languages. She also holds a Postgraduate Certificate in Academic Practice from the University of Birmingham and is a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy.
Raquel also completed an MPhil in Applied Linguistics to Teaching Spanish as a Foreign Language at Universidad Antonio de Nebrija, Spain, with a thesis entitled The Linguistic Landscape as a tool to promote connections with the target language and culture. This dissertation won the ASELE (Asociación para la enseñanza del español como lengua extranjera) Research Prize for best MA Thesis in 2020.
Research interests
She is interested in the field of Applied Linguistics and Second Language Acquisition and, in particular, in the use of the linguistic landscape as a tool in the Foreign Language Classroom. Raquel is currently coordinating the HS Linguistic Landscape project, and is interested in the presence of Spanish in the streets of the UK in order to (1) analyse its possibilities as an additional source of input in second language acquisition and (2) examine whether its uses or presence will vary after Brexit.
