News from Warwick Biology Society (BioSoc)

BioSoc is the student run society for those studying a degree in Life Sciences. Aside from running fun socials and activities, BioSoc are also involved in community projects around the university and assisting the outreach team by going into schools and running demonstrations.

The mentoring scheme that BioSoc have been running for the past few years has been shaken up this year. Instead of being assigned a second or third year mentor to their tutor group, the first years have had the opportunity to meet with mentors at informal socials organised by BioSoc, talking lab reports over cake and lemonade in the SLS Atrium. The socials have had great success in encouraging inter-year friendships and peer support.

Also new for this year is an environmental project in the Tocil Woods on the university campus. The work involves trimming back trees to allow light to reach the woodland floor, encouraging the growth of low growing plants. The project ended with a celebratory bonfire to warm the cold winter hands. Similar conservation events will be held throughout the year, and will continue to be the perfect way to combine BioSoc socials with conservation.

BioSoc are well underway in planning the Springtime Ball, partnered with PhySoc, at the Grade II-listed Royal Pump Rooms in Leamington Spa. We are hoping to emulate last year’s success with over 200 people leaving behind their lab coats for a glamorous night out. Rumours have it that this year may be a Masquerade Ball.

Also building on the successes from the past few years, the BioSoc executive team have aimed to increase the number of socials held in each term. This has proved a raging success with our first ever Circle (Warwick tradition games social) having an attendance of over 30 people! Last year’s famous Kasbah socials were repeated with similar success; with 70 first, second and third years dancing the night away in (arguably) Coventry’s best nightclub.
