The Graduate School invite applications from PhD students for one fully-funded place at a major national postgraduate conference, ‘Life Beyond the PhD’.
The conference will take place between 27th August to 31st August 2019 at the stunning venue of Cumberland Lodge, set in the Royal landscape of Windsor Great Park. This annual conference is a unique celebration of postgraduate research culture in the UK, inviting PhD students from across the country to exchange ideas, practices, experiences and aspirations. It gives PhD students an outstanding opportunity to share research, explore collaborative and interdisciplinary ways of working and to present to a diverse, non-expert audience.
The varied programme includes sessions on:
Presentation and writing skills
Self-leadership for researchers
Interdisciplinary research proposals
Mental health for doctoral students
Sharing research with a nonspecialist audience.
Leading figures in academia and outside will explain how their research has influenced and enriched their lives. Confirmed speakers include:
- Dr Eilidh Cage - Lecturer in Psychology at Royal Holloway, University of London
- Dr Steve Joy - Head of Researcher Development at the University of Cambridge
- Alexander Blower - PhD student at the University of Wolverhampton
- Margaret Webster - Professional Copywriter
- Dr Catherine Oakley - Lead Researcher at York Castle Museum
- Rachel Hall - Editor of Guardian Universities
- Laura Castells Navarro - Cranfield Recovery and Identification of Conflict Casualties Team of Cranfield University
The key to the event is that PhD students are shown that PhDs have demonstrable value both inside and outside academia. The support networks established by these events have proved to be invaluable whatever the future holds.
The Graduate School invites applications from PhD students, who are in their second or third year (or part-time equivalent) of registration in any discipline. The University will cover the registration fee of £295 for one selected candidate for the four night stay (in shared accommodation), including all meals.
As a condition of the funding we expect a short report to be written after attending the conference to share your experiences so that we may use this on our website or in marketing materials in the future. We will then, once this has been submitted, reimburse reasonable travel expenses.
