|Title||LGBTUA Student Support Group|
|What is the LGBTAU Student Support Group?||This group consists of 5 weekly sessions and will provide a gentle and supportive route into discussing and understanding a variety of issues surrounding sexuality in a safe and confidential space.
Issues that we have discussed in the past include:
Coming out – to yourself and others , Being bullied or marginalised at school, and its impact today. Body image, Assertiveness, Relationships, Sex, Religion.
|What happens after you register?||You’ll be invited to a short meeting with Monique, who runs the group, to find out more about it before deciding if it’s something that you want to do. Please register soon so that I have time to meet with you.
If you do join the group, I ask that you attend all five sessions so that you and others get the most out of the group.
|What happens in the group?||To begin with, you will get to know a bit about one another. Then each week we have some time to check-in and talk about anything that’s important to you, as well as some time to do an activity together. You’ll sometimes work on your own, other times with one or two other people, and as a whole group. Things we talk about include:
your ‘coming out’ journey, your circle of relationships and how you’d like that to develop. How stereotypes of LGBTUA+ people can make it hard for you to develop your own identity.
You can add suggestions to what we’ll discuss in the five sessions we’ll have together too.
|Why have a group?||Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, Trans*, A sexual…all of these identities (and more) can be tricky in a world that may still see being heterosexual and cisgendered as ‘normal’. You may not have had many opportunities to think about what it means for you or to talk with others in a supportive environment about how you feel about this. The group aims to provide this kind of opportunity.
It’s not just about ‘coming out’ – it’s also about – ‘what then?’ Relationships, self-esteem, assertiveness – all the typical kinds of issues we all have to deal with whatever our sexual orientation but which can be made more complicated because of being LGBTUA+.
