Read and Publish Agreements
Publisher Agreements
The University of Warwick has agreements with several publishers. Some allow you to publish your articles open access without requiring further payment to the publisher. Others entitle you to a discounted open access fee / article processing charge (APC), or to deposit your accepted manuscript in the repository with zero embargo.
Enquiries about all of these agreements can be directed to the Open Research Team.
To be eligible for most of the Read and Publish Agreements, the corresponding author must be affiliated with the University of Warwick. Some publishers may restrict the agreements to original research articles. If given the option, we ask that authors select the CC BY (Creative Commons Attribution)Link opens in a new window Licence.
- if your publisher offers free APCs: follow the instructions for your publisher below. You don't need to complete a separate application
- if your publisher offers discounted APCs: you still need to apply to use APC funding
- if your publisher doesn't offer free or discounted APCs: apply to use APC funding
Using SciFree, you can check whether specific journals are covered by our Read and Publish Agreements. You can search using either the journal name or ISSN, and you can filter the results by publisher, coverage, licence options and types of journal.
All journals covered by our agreements are listed in SciFree, including those that only offer a discount on APCs, or those that are only available to certain authors. Using the "who pays" column, you can check whether your journal is fully covered by the agreements:
These icons indicate that the journal is fully covered by our Read and Publish Agreements.
These icons indicate that the journal only offers a discount on APCs; as a result, the rest of the APC will need to be paid and you may need to apply for APC funding.
This icon indicates that only articles by certain authors are covered by our Read and Publish Agreements in this journal. In this case, you should consult the guidance below to see whether you are eligible.
We ask that authors select the Creative Commons Attribution Licence (CC BY) rather than the other, more restrictive licences (e.g. BY-ND, BY-NC, BY-NC-ND).
The CC BY licence makes the work as open as possible while still ensuring that the author's work is acknowledged through a reference. This licence also ensures that the article is compliant with the open access policies of various funders including UKRI, Wellcome and NIHR.
The agreements will cover the Open Access costs associated with the article (often known as APCs). You may, however, still be liable for other costs, such as colour charges, page charges and submission charges.
Please note that there is no provision in the library to cover these kinds of additional charges, and as such should either be avoided or the funding to cover them must be sourced elsewhere.
While different publishers use different language to describe the assigned corresponding author, broadly speaking the author who submits the article and corresponds with the publisher will be the designated responsible corresponding author.
SciFree lists all of the journals covered by our Read and Publish Agreements. Please note that this includes journals that offer a discount rather than a full cost cover. See the "Using SciFree" guide for more information.
There is no pre-notification required to publish under the agreements. As long as you are eligible for the agreement and select to publish Open Access at the acceptance stage, then the article should be automatically picked up.
To help identify the article as eligible for the agreements, we ask that you ensure you list the University of Warwick as your affiliation when you can. You may also want to use your university email address in the submission process to help with the identification.
