The Centre for Lifelong Learning will be launching a new project to help adult learners achieve GCSEs.

The ‘GCSE for Me’ initiative is a pilot project which is designed to help adult learners achieve a GCSE qualification in English or maths.

The GCSE courses will run by experienced subject specialists for the first time from September 2017.

Both GCSE qualifications will be focused on the new qualification specifications and will be assessed through the 9-1 grading system.

The English programme will be a blended learning course, which will centre upon a speaking and listening certification, as well as developing both reading and writing skills. The maths course will prepare learners for all aspects of the GCSE maths curriculum including problem solving and calculator skills.

Vina Sharma will be teaching on the English portion of the project.

She said: “The University of Warwick recognises that adult learners bring valuable skills, experience and expertise to a wide range of higher education courses.

“We are also aware that many of these learners may have arrived at University study later in life through varied pathways.

“The GCSE courses we are offering seek to provide adult learners with the chance to study for an important foundation qualification, should they have not secured the qualification as part of their journey into higher education. In addition, the qualifications are open to University of Warwick staff as well as existing students.”

In addition to delivering GCSE English and maths to adult learners currently undertaking programmes at the University of Warwick, we are also strengthening partnerships with local colleges by providing boosters and bespoke masterclasses.

Bernadette Evans, who will be teaching maths, added: “We will be working with various colleges such as City College Coventry, Solihull College, Warwickshire College, Walsall College and North Warwickshire and Hinckley College. By offering a similar package to community based adult learners, we hope to support the widening participation agenda and remove potential barriers to further study.

“We hope that learners on these courses enjoy moving forward in their studies and that the GCSE courses give learners a solid foundation for securing new skills whilst enhancing existing skills. We also hope that securing a GCSE qualification in either English or maths will open new doors for learners, allowing them to gain access to postgraduate courses and new career opportunities.”
