Find A Supervisor

One of the main reasons that potential research students are unsuccessful is the focus of the proposed research does not fit with the University’s supervisory competences. The majority of our academic departments advise you to contact prospective supervisors in advance of your application, to discuss with them how your research interests may be compatible with their interests and experience. Before getting in touch, please check the postgraduate research webpages on the relevant department website to see if this applies in your case.

Once you have identified an academic, you need to persuade them that you are a suitable candidate. You also need to feel comfortable with the supervisor; after all they will be your mentor for at least 3 years. It is wise, if distance permits, to arrange a meeting with them or a telephone conversation where you can discuss your proposed PhD and their research interest. During discussions they will be able to help you focus on your topic offering advice on how to structure your research. They may also be able to help you with funding applications. Please note, much more guidance on this topic is available on the Warwick Doctoral College website.
