Module Assessment

Formative Essays:

For essay titles: please choose any of the weekly seminar presentations or questions, or, if you would like to formulate your own questions (which you may want to do, especially for the long essay) please run it by me first.

The word length and deadlines for formative essays are on the module timetable.

Please hand a hard copy of your essay to me or place it in the plastic folder outside my office.

Summative Assessment

    • Your general level of contribution in seminars (talking, asking questions, etc.).
  • 45% - 4,500 word long essay
    • Deadline: week 10 of term 2 - please refer to your coursework profile on Tabula
    • Can be on any topic from the module, either using one of the seminar questions or setting your own title.
    • Can be a development of a formative piece, or your seminar presentation.
    • For information on submission, please see the departmental pages.
  • 45% - 2 hour exam

General information about assessed work including deadline dates and submission information can be found on the department Assessment & Submission webpages. The 'long essay' will be due in week 10 of term 2. Please note that submission will be by Tabula only - no paper copies needed.

It is important to think carefully about your essay title for the assessed essay – which should be in the form of a question. You should aim for something that is manageable but also gives you a clear target to aim at – lots of student essays write ‘about’ a theme without sufficiently directing their analysis towards answering a particular question. It is fine to develop a short essay but think about what is different about a long essay: you have more space to bring in primary material and hence your own voice, and you can drill down into case studies and add depth to an answer. So the long essay is not simply a padded out version of the short essay. When writing the essay make sure you then answer the question you have set yourself – try to target your research and argument to it. Take another look at the marking criteria to see what will be rewarded.

The exam will take place during summer term on a date that will be scheduled closer to the time.
