Introduction to APP EXP Assessing

Background to assessing on APP EXP

Assessors are crucial to the success of the APP EXP pathway. They consider applications from colleagues who are applying for fellowship, undertaking a peer review of the evidence presented against the criteria. All new assessor on APP EXP will need to undertake induction activities which include two workshops and the shadowing of assessment panels. They are also expected to maintain up to date knowledge of the PSF and the APP EXP pathway once they have completed the induction activities.

Overview of induction activities

In order to become a fully member of the APP EXP assessor network it is necessary to undertake induction activities. These are:

Workshop 1: Introduction to APP EXP Assessing (2 hours)

In this workshop we will address the basics of assessing. We will:

  • Consider again the requirements for each of the four Descriptors (D1-4), considering similarities and differences between the categories.
  • Review approaches in the dialogic and written routes, considering how assessors would approach each route when assessing on it.
  • Understand the documentation which supports assessment processes.
  • Consider an extract from an application and undertake a 'mock' assessment process.

Activities following Workshop 1 and prior to Workshop 2

The intention is that following the first workshop assessors will undertake the following activities:

  • observe a dialogic panel (without playing a part in the decision making process).
  • complete an already assessed written application and write feedback ready to discuss at Workshop 2.

Workshop 2: More on APP EXP assessing (normally 3-months or so from Workshop 1)

In this second workshop we will:

  • Reflect upon the experiences of observing a dialogic panel and consider learning points for future assessing.
  • Discuss the written application that was assessed prior to the workshop and consider the decision you made and how that compares to the decision made by others. Reflect on the feedback that you wrote.
  • Discuss the important idea of 'sufficiency' when assessing on APP EXP. When is enough enough?

Following completion of the assessor induction activities you would become a member of the APP EXP mentor and assessor network and join the list of active assessors. Completing the APP EXP assessor preparation does not guarantee being allocated assessment(s), although we will endeavour to do so.

Please contact APP EXP with any questions about this.
