An Introduction to Synthetic Biology for Plant Scientists

Synthetic biology is a fast-growing research area and an increasingly important industry predicted to be worth $10.8bn globally in 2016. UK policy makers are taking it very seriously: in November last year, George Osborne announced a £20 million investment for synthetic biology; and it is a BBSRC Strategic Priority. These current and future funding opportunities are just one reason to consider synthetic biology. Plant synthetic biology is a conceptual framework within which to both extend basic molecular plant science and develop a new generation of commercially important plant products. Plant synthetic biology is an emerging field that holds enormous potential, yet remains to be shaped and explored by innovative, engaged, interdisciplinary thinkers within the UK scientific community.

This meeting will introduce and showcase the many and varied applications of synthetic biology at the molecular, cell, and whole plant level to introduce synthetic biology to a broad UK plant science base. Speakers will present a range of synthetic biology applications, from synthetic molecules to whole plant engineering, and will introduce the wide range of available synthetic biology methods, tools, and resources. There will also be time for open discussion about what the plant science community needs to take synthetic biology in plants further.



Date and venue

The meeting is a two-day meeting from 21-22 May 2013, and will be at the University of Nottingham, in the Exchange Building on the Jubilee Campus.

Registration costs £250 for academics and research professionals, £225 for post-docs and £175 for students. This includes accommodation on the 21st May at the National College for School Leadership, which is walking distance from the Exchange Building, breakfast and conference dinner. All the rooms are en suite and have wireless internet access.
