Phase I has 3 Terms:

  1. September – December
  2. January – March
  3. April – June

Please note: the MB ChB course operates outside University term dates.

Phase I Blocks

The first year is divided into Blocks with assessments at the end of each block. Block topics in Year 1 are:

  • Welcome Week 
  • Health, Metabolism and Homeostasis 
  • Blood, Lungs and Heart 
  • Brain and Behaviour 
  • Locomotion 
  • Reproduction and Child Health 

Themes

As well as Blocks, woven through the whole course are Themes - these are:

  • Cell & Tissue Biomedicine 
  • Clinical Anatomy & Imaging 
  • Clinical Skills 
  • Personal & Professional Development  
  • Pharmacology, Prescribing & Therapeutics 
  • Social & Population Perspectives 
  • Values, Law & Ethics
  • Communication skills and lived experience
  • Community

These theme topics are integrated into the Blocks and in every Phase of the course.

Each theme has an Academic Lead. 

Students may have specific theme topic teaching on Academic Days.
