Messier Catalogue

M101

The Whirlpool Galaxy, M101, is close to us at z=0.0008. It is a face-on, grand-design spiral. In May 2023 it also hosted one of the closest type II supernovae seen to date. The supernova is visible in the upper left of the galaxy in the image above.

Observed: 21/5/2023
Observers: J McCormac, T Rodel

M13

The Great Globular Cluster in Hercules, M13, is one of the most prominent globular star clusters in the northern hemisphere. It is observable almost all year long from the UK and in 1974 was the target of the Arecibo Message.

Observed: 24/5/2023
Observers: T Killestein, T Rodel, B Godson

M82

M82 is a starburst galaxy, with faint spiral arms seen edge-on to the sky. The galaxy has pronounced dust lanes crossing its disk. Imaging at other wavelengths reveals that this is a massive outflow, driven by the central starburst.
Observed: 24/5/2023
Observers: T Killestein, T Rodel, B Godson
