Research was commissioned by the Ministry of Defence to understand how military engineering careers compared with those industry using a range of measures. The aim of the research was to develop an engineering ‘careers equivalence’ model that enabled comparison of the Royal Navy engineering offer with the offer that is provided in civilian industry. The programme of work included a literature review, case studies, stakeholder interviews and the development of a careers equivalence model. The research provided answers to the following questions:

• How do Defence careers in engineering compare with those in industry?
• How do the offers provided by Defence and industry compare?
• What are the relative strengths and weaknesses of all Offer components, in relation to impact on retention at different career stages?
