‘Reflections on the History of Psychohistory’
Professor Mathew Thomson
‘Psychohistory’ was for a brief time a big deal in History, but it has faded into obscurity and notoriety. Mathew Thomson’s talk will explain what Psychohistory was and why it fell away. More importantly, he will argue that this framing of the relationship between the two disciplines obscures a longer-term and inevitable psychological dimension to history. Finally, he will reflect on the lessons of that history and the opportunities and challenges to develop a more constructive dialogue between History and the Behavioural Sciences today.
