Fieldwork abroad: How to plan and what to expect
This workshop will help facilitate a better understanding of how to do fieldwork aboard, and some of the problems a researcher might face in the foreign contexts. Our discussion will include both travelling to your own home country, as well as travelling to a foreign country for work.
The workshop will also help research think about risk assessment plans as part of their research design. The workshop will further include:
- Some examples and experiences of archival research, elite interviews, oral history and ethnographic research and official permissions.
- Insider/outsider experiences of doing research
- Gatekeeping
- Communication and safety
- Culture shock and reverse culture shock
- FCO advice, local advice and safety.
- When fieldwork goes wrong: lack of access, data unsuitable, personal wellbeing etc.
