'The Draughtsman', 1918-1920

The Association of Engineering and Shipbuilding Draughtsmen was formed in the early twentieth century. It became the Draughtsmen and Allied Technicians' Association (DATA) in 1960. In April 1970 the Amalgamated Union of Engineering and Foundry Workers (AEF) amalgamated with the Draughtsmen's and Allied Technicians' Association (DATA) and the Constructional Engineering Union to form the Amalgamated Union of Engineering Workers (AUEW).

The Modern Records Centre has a largely complete run of the journal from 1918-1971. The first volume, covering the period between 1918-1920, has been digitised and is available through our online catalogue. Subjects include: branch and district news, the history of the union, wages and working conditions, industrial action, the First World War and other contemporary international and domestic events, education and training, and intellectual property (e.g. patents and copyright). Cartoons and poems are also sometimes included.
