'On the Road' was first published by the Commercial Travellers' Christian Association in 1883 and became the official journal of the United Kingdom Commercial Travellers' Association (UKCTA) in 1886. The Modern Records Centre has a large but incomplete run of the union's journal 'On The Road' / 'Selling Today' between 1883-1974. Editions of 'On The Road' between May 1883 - April 1885, January 1886 - November 1888, and January 1892 - December 1903 have been digitised and are available through our online catalogue.

Subjects include: reports on the activities of commercial travellers' organisations including UKCTA, the Commercial Travellers' Christian Association, the Commercial Travellers' Benevolent Institution, and commercial travellers' schools and libraries; articles on religion and temperance (particularly in the early years); articles about being 'on the road', transport and the work of a commercial traveller in Britain, Ireland and beyond; profiles and portraits of prominent members (from 1887 onwards); branch and district news; poems and songs; and listings of recommended hotels.
