14-28 Sep 1871 23 Sep 1871 Accidently killed by a travelling crane at the new Town Hall works Full "As a tribute of respect to the memory of their fellow-workman by the masons employed on the building, they, at three o'clock in the afternoon of Tuesday, the 26th instant, ceased working in a body, started in procession from Albert Square, and proceeded to the Infirmary. From thence they accompanied the body to London Road Station, from whence it was forwarded to Lincolnshire, the deceased's native county. Upwards of 1,000 men joined in the procession, of whom 640 were masons, the others being labourers and other tradesmen. The men walked in their working clothes, the masons wearing their aprons. The heads of the firm of contractors engaged upon the building accompanied the procession". Application for accident provision on pp.7-8.
