National Union of Mineworkers archives catalogued

A century and a half of history encased in more than 1,500 archive boxes. After three years, conservation and cataloguing of the archives of the National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) has been completed.

The project, funded by the Wellcome Trust, the National Manuscripts Conservation Trust and the Pilgrim Trust, reflects the NUM's wish to preserve its rich history, have the impact of the industry on coalfield communities memorialised, and to share information about the key role played by the union in British history. The archives of the National Union of Mineworkers join other key trade union collections at the Modern Records Centre, enabling researchers to dig deeper into the history of Britain's industrial past.

The archives held at the Modern Records Centre include the central records of the National Union of Mineworkers (formed in 1945), a smaller quantity of material relating to the NUM's predecessor, the Miners' Federation of Great Britain (formed in 1890), and archives relating to some of the area or district unions, including key collections relating to Yorkshire, Cumberland and Leicester.
