In 1962, the United Society of Boilermakers, Shipbuilders and Structural Workers and the Associated Blacksmiths' Forge and Smithy Workers' Society amalgamated to form the United Society of Boilermakers, Blacksmiths, Shipbuilders and Structural Workers. The following year the Shipconstructors' and Shipwrights' Association joined the union, which was renamed the Amalgamated Society of Boilermakers, Shipwrights, Blacksmiths and Structural Workers. In 1982, this amalgamated with the National Union of General and Municipal Workers to form the General, Municipal, Boilermakers and Allied Trades Union (GMB).

The main genealogical source is the series of monthly and annual reports, 1962-1976 (MSS.192/BM/4/1/86-98), and monthly reports, 1977-1982 (MSS.192/BM/4/2/1-6). These were carried on by the GMB Boilermakers' Section, 1983-1984 (MSS.192/BM/4/2/7-8).

New members

New members are listed by branch in the monthly reports from 1962 to 1984, with name and trade.

Members run out and expelled

Members who had gone into or were about to go into arrears or who had been expelled for any reason are listed by branch in the monthly reports from 1962 to 1977 and 1983 to 1984, with name only.

Deceased members

Deceased members and members' wives are listed in the annual reports every year from 1962 to 1973, with name, branch, age, date of death and cause of death. Lists of deceased members and wives are also included in every monthly report from 1962 to 1984, with name and branch only.

Fuller obituaries of many prominent members and officers, often with photographs, appear in the monthly reports.

Transferring members

The clearance book (MSS.192/BM/2/4/1) lists members transferring from one branch to another between 1971 and 1973, with name, trade, date and branches transferred from and to.

Superannuated members

Superannuated (pensioned) members are listed in the annual reports from 1962 to 1973, with name, date of superannuation, branch, and date of joining the union.

Members receiving benefits

Members receiving accident payments are listed in the annual reports from 1962 to 1974, with name, branch and nature of accident.

All members receiving benefits for any reason (e.g. sick benefit, travelling relief, home donations, fares, dispute pay, superannuation) are listed by branch in the annual reports from 1962 to 1970, with name only.

Branch secretaries

Names and addresses of branch secretaries are listed in the annual reports from 1962 to 1976. Changes in secretaries and their addresses are listed in the monthly reports from 1962 to 1984.

Miscellaneous

There are often biographical sketches and photographs of prominent members and officers in the monthly reports.

Employers

The names and addresses of local boiler shops and shipyards are listed by branch in the annual reports from 1962 to 1974.
