Our language degrees
With four excellent academic departments - French, German, Italian and Hispanic Studies - and an outstanding Language Centre, you can choose from over 50 possible degree combinations and tailor your studies to suit you. Our joint honours courses enable you to study languages with various other academic subjects.

Study one language
Specialise in a single language and its associated cultures, exploring politics, society, history, film and visual culture, and literature from the places where that language is spoken

Study two or three languages
Our BA in Modern Languages will allow you to develop degree level proficiency and fluency in two or three languages and cultures.
Route one: You study two languages, specialising in the culture of at least one of those languages.
Route two: You focus on two languages and their related cultures, while taking a third language in addition.

Combine language and another subject
A joint honours degree allows you to explore your chosen language at the same time as exploring another subject from another department. The degrees have a 50/50 split between two chosen subjects.

Whether you study just one language, or two or three, we offer modules that take an intercultural approach to themes ranging from philosophy to politics, translation to literature.
Study abroad
Spending a year abroad studying or working enables you to immerse yourself in the languages and cultures of your chosen degree. If that's not for you we can help you to apply for intensive summer language courses and offer ongoing online tandem exchanges with native speaker partners overseas.
