This degree explores two rich and diverse literary and cultural traditions, with a core Spanish language module in every year of study. Spanish may be studied either from Beginner, Post-Beginner or Advanced level.

Alongside your learning of the Spanish language, the first year will introduce you to Hispanic culture such as literature, film, politics and art. You will also study English literature, and comparative literature though core and optional core modules.

In your intermediate and final years, all English and Hispanic optional modules are open to you. Topics range from literature and critical theory to history, politics, linguistics, philosophy and film. In your final year, you can choose to write a dissertation, including the option to write on a comparative topic addressing both Hispanic and English literature. You will normally spend your second or third year of study consolidating and enhancing your language skills abroad.

You will also normally spend your second or third year of study abroad.

Entry requirements

Modules

In your first year, you will take language classes designed to develop your knowledge and understanding of written and spoken Spanish (either ‘Modern Spanish Language 1’ or ‘Modern Spanish Language 1 Beginners’). You will choose one additional module in Hispanic Studies which will provide you with the foundation to study further aspects of Hispanic culture in the later stages of your degree (either Language, Text and Identity in the Hispanic World or Icons and Representations of the Hispanic World).

On the English side of your degree, you will take ‘Modes of Reading’, a module that focuses on questions of approach, critical practice, and reading strategies. You will additionally choose one English module in your first year, from a list of three: ‘Epic into Novel’; ‘Medieval and Early Modern Literature’; or ‘Modern World Literatures’.

In your intermediate and final years, you will further develop your Spanish language skills in more advanced language classes, and you will be able to develop your own particular interests in Hispanic culture by choosing from a wide selection of modules taught by specialists in culture, society, literature, politics, philosophy, film, and history. If you wish, you can also select from interdisciplinary cross-School modules including Translation Studies modules. Similarly, in English, you will take core modules in each year and will be able to pursue your own interests alongside this through a range of optional modules taught by experts in the field.

Note that the module catalogue is subject to change for future years of study, as we evolve our courses in response to the latest developments in academia and industry. If optional modules are listed below, these can vary from year to year.
