Postgraduate Taught Welcome Week

PGT Students Socialising

Welcome Week begins on 28 September 2026 and marks the start of your journey with us. During this week you will:

  • gain an overview of your course structure and the opportunities available to you

  • meet other students on your programme

  • get to know key academic and professional services staff within the Department

Welcome Week is designed to help you settle in quickly, build connections, and feel confident as you begin term. Alongside university-wide events, the Department of Computer Science runs a dedicated subject induction programme tailored to your course.

In addition to timetabled sessions, our teaching labs will be open at selected times for supported drop-in sessions. These are ideal if you would like extra practice using our systems or if you have been exploring the preparatory programming materials and would welcome the chance to discuss them with a tutor. Full details and timings will be included in your Welcome Week information.

Preparing for Study

There is no requirement to complete extensive preparation before you arrive. However, if you have limited or no prior programming experience, you may find it helpful to familiarise yourself with some basic programming and computing concepts.

We provide a range of optional preparatory resources, including an introductory online Python course designed to help you build confidence before term begins. Even writing a few small programs of your own can make a real difference. You can find further details on our Reading List and “Preparing to Study” pages, which also highlight wider reading that many students find interesting and useful.

Once you arrive, we will provide structured teaching and ongoing support to help you develop your programming skills throughout your studies.

Support You’ll Receive

When you join us, you will be assigned a Personal Tutor who can offer academic guidance and support during your time at Warwick.

Welcome Week will also include Q&A sessions and social events, giving you the opportunity to meet fellow students, ask questions, and familiarise yourself with the Department and wider university life.

The University of Warwick Computing Society (UWCS) is another excellent way to connect with peers. Society representatives will run activities during Welcome Week and will be happy to share how you can get involved. You may also wish to explore other student societies through the Students’ Union.

International Students

We strongly encourage international students to complete the International Students: Student Success online course before arriving.

This course offers practical advice on living and studying in the UK, building confidence, communicating with peers, and maintaining good mental health. The core content takes approximately two to four hours to complete and provides an excellent introduction to life at Warwick.

What Happens Next?

Before term begins, you will receive further emails from us with details about your timetable and Welcome Week events. The University will also contact you with information about services, opportunities, and support available to you as a Warwick student.

We look forward to welcoming you to the Department of Computer Science.
