Afzan Adam
Hi! I am senior lecturer at Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (The National University of Malaysia) and currently a visiting researcher at the Tissue Image Analytics (TIA) Centre, University of Warwick.
Starting my PhD at the University of Leeds, UK in 2009, I’ve transitioned from radiological imaging to the emerging field of digital pathology. Unlike traditional grayscale medical images, digital pathology offers rich, multi-resolution, and interactive data, opening new possibilities for computational analysis.
My visit to the TIA Centre is supported by UKM and the MIGHT-TÜBİTAK grant. Through this collaboration, I aim to gain deeper insights into the future directions of digital and computational pathology, while fostering strategic partnerships in research, postgraduate supervision, and joint grant applications.
Teaching Subjects
- Image Processing (master's level)
- Machine Learning for Data Science (masters level)
- Introduction to Artificial Intelligence (bachelor's level)
- Algorithm Design and Analysis (bachelor's level)
Current Research Outputs
Over the years, I have worked to advance digital pathology in Malaysia through competitive grants and collaborations with both local and international partners. I actively collaborate with Hospital UKM, Pantai Hospital, the International Academy of Pathology (Malaysia), the Swiss Digital Pathology Association, Acibadem University, and Virasoft, among others.
Currently, my projects focus on cancer screening and prediction, including blood, cervical, breast, prostate, nasopharyngeal, and lung cancers, as well as CT-based area estimation using POBF. These efforts aim to support progress prediction and personalized treatment strategies.
