Jayanthi Sivaswamy: Retinal image analysis
Retinal images are used by ophthalmologists to gauge the health of the vital part of the visual sensory system in humans. Diseases that affect vision often manifest themselves as lesions in the retina which are characterized by shape, colour, texture, etc. Diabetes, for example, is a common disease that can affect vision and is of interest worldwide due to its prevalence in significant section of every country’s population. Automated image analysis aims to detect and segment lesions and help quantify the severity of diseases. At IIIT-Hyderabad, we have been working closely with an eye research institute to develop image analysis solutions to aid the retinal experts. In this talk, we will share our experiences by highlighting the challenges and opportunities offered in this work. We will also present some of the solutions to lesion detection that we have developed using a topographic approach.
The speaker is an Associate professor at IIIT- Hyderabad, India. Prior to joining her current position in 2001, she was with The University of Auckland, New Zealand for 8 years. She has a PhD in Electrical engineering from Syracuse University and her research interests are early vision (in human and computer vision) and medical image processing.
