Meena Sharma
What is your current role and what does a typical week look like?
I currently work as a Science Technician in the teaching laboratories within the School of Life Sciences (SLS). My primary responsibility is to support undergraduate practical teaching by preparing and providing laboratory equipment, reagents, chemicals, and microbiological cultures in collaboration with my team. In addition to supporting teaching laboratories, I am helping outreach activities and the British Biology Olympiad.
A typical week varies considerably because we support a wide range of practical classes delivered by different academic staff to different student groups. As a result, my workload is diverse and dynamic, requiring flexibility, strong organisational skills, and the ability to adapt to changing priorities. This variety makes the role both challenging and rewarding, and I enjoy contributing to the smooth delivery of high-quality practical teaching.
Which part of your role do you enjoy the most, and what are the biggest challenges?
The aspect of my current role that I enjoy most is preparing and providing laboratory facilities for practical experiments. It is particularly rewarding to see students develop their confidence, practical skills, and resilience through these laboratory sessions, knowing that I have contributed to creating an effective learning environment.
One of the biggest challenges of my role is managing time during term time, particularly when there are back-to-back practical sessions. These periods are extremely busy, and ensuring that all laboratory facilities are fully prepared and available on time requires careful planning, organisation, and the ability to work efficiently under pressure.
Which skills help you most in being able to perform your role?
Flexibility is an often underestimated skill, yet it is essential for making sustained and constructive contributions within the life sciences field. In addition, teamwork and effective time management are also critical competencies for this role.
How has your education or roles previous to joining Life Sciences, informed your interests, and why did you choose this career direction?
I completed all of my higher education in Life Sciences in India and taught Biology at secondary schools and colleges for nearly 12 years. Throughout my teaching career, I developed a strong passion for inspiring students and enhancing their understanding of science.
I am passionate to supporting science education at a global level and enjoy working closely with students to help them develop their knowledge, skills, and confidence. My strong subject knowledge, learning attitude, extensive teaching experience, and enthusiasm for science align perfectly with my current role at the University of Warwick, where I support students and academics in conducting their research and experimental work.
What is your favourite place on campus and why?
Tocil Wood is one of the most scenic and peaceful places on the University of Warwick campus. During the spring, the woodland is transformed into a breathtaking landscape as thousands of bluebells come into full bloom, creating the impression of a blue carpet stretching across the forest floor. It is a wonderful place to relax and enjoy nature. I particularly enjoy taking walks there in the evenings, whether on my own, with colleagues, or with my family.
What are your main interests or passions, outside of work?
Outside of work, I enjoy spending quality time with my family. One of the most fulfilling experiences for me is watching my daughter grow and pursue her passions. It is incredibly rewarding to see her playing football, participating in robotics competitions, and performing Indian traditional dance on stage. Witnessing her enthusiasm, dedication, and achievements brings me immense joy and satisfaction.
I also have a passion for continuous learning and enjoy exploring new skills. This year, I started attending regular yoga classes to improve my physical and mental well-being. More recently, I have been learning cooking from my daughter, which has been both fun and rewarding. Together, we have made fresh Italian pizza from scratch and prepared Spanish churros, making the experience even more special.
