IER was a pioneer in labour market assessment in the UK, together with its forecasting work. IER research has been innovative, improving the understanding of trends and changes in occupational structures and introducing the impact of demographic change on labour demand. This work builds on the foundations of extensive research into the nature of the labour market. IER has also undertaken labour market analysis at sub-national levels addressing labour market and socio-economic change at regional and local levels in both urban and rural contexts. Projects have included analyses of the influence of employment and skills challenges for economic development at the local level, the development of demographic, social and economic indicators at a variety of geographical scales and the evaluation of area-based policy initiatives. A further stream of research has investigated perceptions of place.
