PRETAMAG
The PRETAMAG project is a joint theoretical and experimental investigation into the Physics underlying the principles of design of Rare Earth - Transition metAl permanent MAGnets.
The well-documented, growing demand for strong permanent magnetic materials, which maintain performance at high temperatures (T > 100ÂșC) but contain as little of the most critical rare earth and transition metal elements as possible, requires a quantitative understanding of the underlying condensed matter physics. The aim of our project is to uncover key design principles.
We have a diverse research team with expertise in theoretical and computational magnetic materials modelling, state-of-the-art sample synthesis, characterisation, experimental investigation and more applied science. Our project is combining an advanced quantum modelling technique with a carefully planned experimental search to tackle a key technological challenge.
The PRETAMAG project is a collaboration between scientists at the University of Warwick, the University of Birmingham and STFC Daresbury Laboratory. It is funded by the UK Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council.
