Our GRP is thrilled to be supporting a Children and Inequality Conference that is to be hosted by the School of Psychology, and sponsored by the British Psychological Society.

Research across the social sciences has attempted to understand the psychological impact of inequality on young people. The main contributions of this literature include a recognition of the importance of social inclusion and social identity in the context of social groups and children's agency in responding to and coping with inequality. Indeed, how children perceive and cope with inequality seems to be key in mediating the effects of inequality on children's developmental outcomes. Thus, to understand how inequality affects children it is imperative to examine their understanding inequality as well as the psychological mechanisms underlying this development.

The UK network on “Children and Inequality” brings together researchers from across the social sciences to discuss and investigate these questions. At this conference we will mainly focus on recent developmental psychological research on how children from different social groups experience and respond to inequality. Understanding the developmental origins of children's perceptions of inequality may help researchers, educators, and policy makers combat the effects of inequality on children and societies.
