Writing in Science series: Scientific argumentation
Scientific argumentation |
This workshop is tailored to PGRs in the STEM disciplines. STEM is an academic term that refers to Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics - and includes disciplines in the life sciences, physical sciences, engineering, mathematics, computer science, and the health sciences. This session provides input into frequently encountered aspects of scientific argumentation. We will consider a variety of traditional models and structures for constructing arguments (e.g., Toulmin, Rogerian) and there will be an opportunity to practice developing logical argumentation sequences into longer stretches of text. Emphasis will be given in the session to critical thinking and detecting (and avoiding) logical fallacies and issues of cohesion. This session will be particularly of interest to PGRs who are engaged in writing a report or paper and need advice about how to deploy their argument to best effect.
