Writing in Sciences series: Structuring and sequencing a report

‘This session will provide an overview of the I-M-R-D (Introduction, Methods, Results, Discussion) structure and how it can be used to best effect in reports and publications. The workshop will outline what is to be included in each section of the report. In doing so, it emphasis the writing up stage as a ‘strategic’ process of shaping a persuasive scientific argument. In order to derive full advantage from this workshop, participants should have access during the session to three research papers in their research field or discipline. The session involves critical analysis and small-group discussion. It will be of particular interest to students who are planning or writing a report or publication draft.

 

Who is this for?

This workshop is tailored to PGRs in the STEM disciplines. STEM is an academic term that refers to Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics - and includes disciplines in the life sciences, physical sciences, engineering, mathematics, computer science, and the health sciences.
