EUTOPIA Co-tutelle PhD Scholarships

The EUTOPIA Alliance is formed of ten university partners and Co-Tutelle PhD Scholarships are part of a number of EUTOPIA funding opportunities, funding joint PhDs, co-supervised between a candidate’s home university and a second participating EUTOPIA institution. The programme promotes high-quality research projects with global impact and provides exciting research opportunities for PhD candidates.

Co-tutelle Partners

For 2026-27 we welcome applications for up to five Co-Tutelle PhD Scholarships between Warwick and five of our EUTOPIA partner universities as the Home institution.

Where Warwick is the Host institution, applications must be submitted through the Home institution’s application process. Academic Supervisors must follow the application process published on the Home institution’s webpages.

In addition, we welcome applications for co‑tutelle projects undertaken in partnership with our bilateral partner, Vrije Universiteit Brussel.

Warwick-Home Call Details

We welcome applications in all research areas, co- supervised by academics of the EUTOPIA member universities.

Applications are assessed and decisions are made at a cross institutional level using the following principles:

Quality of the proposed research project
Qualification of the research team
Added value of the Co-Tutelle
Institutional pertinence of the proposal

For Warwick Home Scholarships, the deadline for applications is 20th May 2026 (16:59 GMT).

Warwick-Home Applications

Applications must be led by the academic co-supervisors and submitted by the Home supervisor. Applications submitted by prospective PGRs will not be accepted.

Results are expected to be communicated by 10 July 2026. Further enquiries may be sent to JointPhD@warwick.ac.uk

2026-27 Call Details

We welcome applications from all disciplines, with applications connected to one of the EUTOPIA Lighthouses or the topic of one of the EUTOPIA Research Days particularly encouraged.

Please attach the following supporting documents to the application form:

Supporting letter from HoD
Joint supervision statement
Academic CVs of both co-supervisors
Letter of support from the co-host university confirming willingness to host the PhD student.
Where a PhD candidate has been identified, please provide their Student ID number and a letter of motivation from the PhD candidate.

Applications where a PhD applicant has not yet been identified will be considered, but priority will be given to projects that have already identified an applicant or have compiled a shortlist of applicants.

We particularly encourage applications that include a named PGR application with Home fee status.

For Warwick Home Scholarships, the deadline for applications is 20th May 2026 (16:59 GMT).

Call documents may be subject to updates.

Warwick-Home

Warwick-Home awards made for entry in Autumn 2026 will include the following:

Funding of 4 years (depending on the length of doctoral studies in the partner universities)
The full payment of tuition fees
A maintenance stipend paid at the prevailing UKRI rate
RTSG to support mobility and research costs of £9,900

As agreed and specified in the individual Co-Tutelle Agreement, scholars will spend one year at the partner institution. Warwick will pay the stipend for 4 years and fees in full, including the period when they are at the partner institution.

PhD candidates must meet the minimum entry requirements for PhD programmes in each partner university.
Supervisors in both the home and host institution should meet local and/or national regulations defining the minimum requirements for PhD supervision.
Ethics approval does not need to be applied for until funding has been awarded but must be obtained before projects can begin.

Warwick-Host

Warwick-Host awards made for entry in Autumn 2026 are detailed by the home institution and call documents.

Scholars will be registered at Warwick for 4 years, but will not be charged fees by Warwick at any stage. The scholars will spend one year at Warwick but will continue to receive their stipend from their Host institution.

PhD candidates must meet the minimum entry requirements for PhD programmes in each partner university.
Supervisors in both the home and host institution should meet local and/or national regulations defining the minimum requirements for PhD supervision.

Role of the Doctoral College

The Doctoral College manage the application process, liaise with all successful supervisors, send scholarship offer letters and notify colleagues in Student Finance and PG Admissions about the successful applicants to ensure the student records are set up correctly.

Doctoral College PGR Finance ensure that Warwick scholars are allocated an E code for their Research and Training Support Grant and notify department finance colleagues of this E code so that they can manage the budget (in line with how UKRI RTSG is managed).
