PhD in Mathematics of Systems (2023 Entry)

Mathematics of Systems lecturer at the University of Warwick

Find out more about this Mathematics of Systems research PhD.

On the PhD in Mathematics of Systems you will learn to apply new mathematical techniques to solve real-world systems challenges. Ranked 3rd in the UK in REF 2014, the Warwick Mathematics Institute offers an expertly designed programme to train independent researchers.

Course overview

Would you like to use novel mathematics to tackle real-world problems? Our research bridges two cross-cutting methodological themes that are central to complex multi-scale systems prediction: modelling across spatial and temporal scales; and hybrid modelling integrating complex data and mechanistic models. These themes pervade real-world problems in many areas of active research and will shape mathematical and computational modelling for the coming decades.

If you would like to investigate direct entry to the PhD programme, in the first instance please contact the MathSys teamLink opens in a new window.

Please note that due to the volume of applications and very limited number of funded places, the MathSys CDT is no longer able to accept applications from international students for funded places. They are still able to accept applications from Home-fee students, and EU students who have settled or pre-settled status.

Teaching and learning

The Mathematics for Real-World Systems CDT runs a 1+3 MSc+PhD programme. Entrance is conventionally via the MSc year. Please see the description for MSc in Mathematics of Systems for more information or visit the MathSys CDT website.

As well as the taught MSc component, the PhD years include transferrable skills modules as well as summer schools and reading groups. PhD students are also encouraged to audit relevant courses.

General entry requirements

Minimum requirements

Applications are invited where candidates have already completed Master’s-level training in a related field and obtained a high result.

Our research

The Mathematics of Systems CDT main research themes are:

  • Quantitative biomedical research
  • Mathematical epidemiology
  • Socio-technical systems
  • Advanced modelling and optimisation of industrial processes.

Warwick academics can supervise thesis research in a wide range of topics in mathematics and its applications. In addition, all PhD projects are expected to be co-supervised by an external partner, bringing knowledge, data and experience to the modelling of real-world problems.

Find a supervisor

Please contact the MathSys team if you are considering direct entry to the PhD programme. Please be aware that the MathSys CDT cannot offer funding for direct entrants to the PhD programme.

The 'Find A Supervisor' link below will allow you to explore the research interests of academics within the department. Please include in your application the names of potential supervisors, with interests aligned with yours, or people you would like to work with.

The mathematics department, unlike some other departments, does not require students to make any arrangements with any potential supervisors before applying, though of course you are welcome to contact them directly and discuss your interests and any potential projects they may offer.

Fee Status Guidance

We carry out an initial fee status assessment based on the information you provide in your application. Students will be classified as Home or Overseas fee status. Your fee status determines tuition fees, and what financial support and scholarships may be available. If you receive an offer, your fee status will be clearly stated alongside the tuition fee information.

Do you need your fee classification to be reviewed?

If you believe that your fee status has been classified incorrectly, you can complete a fee status assessment questionnaire. Please follow the instructions in your offer information and provide the documents needed to reassess your status.

Additional course costs

As well as tuition fees and living expenses, some courses may require you to cover the cost of field trips or costs associated with travel abroad.

For departmental specific costs, please see the Modules tab on the course web page for the list of core and optional core modules with hyperlinks to our Module Catalogue (please visit the Department’s website if the Module Catalogue hyperlinks are not provided).

Associated costs can be found on the Study tab for each module listed in the Module Catalogue (please note most of the module content applies to 2022/23 year of study). Information about module department specific costs should be considered in conjunction with the more general costs below:

  • Core text books
  • Printer credits
  • Dissertation binding
  • Robe hire for your degree ceremony
