Warwick's MSc in Innovation and Entrepreneurship combines industry leading approaches in venture design, with the skills needed to launch and grow innovative, digitally enabled and technology-driven businesses.

This collaborative programme designed by WMG and taught in partnership with Warwick Business School, draws on the best expertise in the fields of innovation and entrepreneurship.


Course overview

Designed for innovators eager to make an impact on the worlds of commerce and industry, whilst keeping in view the demands being placed on businesses to remain socio-economically responsible. This course will benefit those who want to develop an entrepreneurial mindset and implement transformative solutions, be that within a start-up, an established family business, or even a major conglomerate. You will apply leading edge approaches to assess emerging opportunities in new markets, industries and geographies.

It is a practical course, covering the new venturing process from generating new business ideas, understanding market trends, applying new technology, and designing the infrastructure, right through to launching the business. You will focus on how innovation can be exploited to design leading-edge new products and services.

Themes covered include business modelling, disruptive thinking, product design, growth hacking, corporate venturing, and financial analysis. Throughout your final project, you will be mentored to develop your own business idea, so that by the end of the course you will be in a strong position to launch your own business, or rejuvenate an existing one.

In WMG, our focus on building key competencies through start-up simulations, industry engagement and experiential learning style helps students in bringing their new venture visions to fruition. You will gain a wide array of skills from 3D printing, digital content creation, idea pivoting to sales. You'll also have numerous opportunities to pitch your ideas, take part in contests, and explore start-up ecosystems.

Minimum requirements

2:1 undergraduate degree (or equivalent).

Candidates with a UK 2:2 (or equivalent) may be accepted upon demonstration of relevant professional experience.

  • Band B
  • IELTS overall score of 7.0 and minimum component scores of two at 6.0/6.5 and the rest at 7.0 or above

Core modules

Core modules are required modules that all students will complete whilst on this programme. For Innovation and Entrepreneurship (IAE), you will take three core modules from WMG and three from WBS. Your core modules are:

  • Digital Start-up and Business Modelling (WMG)
  • Disruptive Technology and Innovation 2.0 (WMG)
  • Product Design (WMG)
  • Entrepreneurial Mindset (WBS)
  • Entrepreneurial Finance (WBS)
  • Corporate Entrepreneurship (WBS)

Optional modules

Students will take two additional elective modules chosen from a list of options provided to you at the start of the academic year - one from WMG and one from WBS. Please see below for an indicative list of electives available for this course:

  • Sales and Sales Management (WMG)
  • Project Management (WBS)
  • Branding and Marketing Communications (WBS)

Teaching

This course has two components – a taught component accounting for two thirds of your time and effort, and a research component accounting for one third.

For the taught component, we blend lectures with seminars, syndicate exercises, simulations, and case studies. The majority of modules are taught in small classes to facilitate and encourage interaction. Others practice larger-scale lectures, which are then supported by small class seminar and group activities.

Our module leaders have extensive industry experience. Guest speakers from industry also contribute regularly, bringing real-world insight into your learning experience.

In addition to your taught modules, you will undertake a major project as part of your Master's degree. For IAE students, your project is usually devoted to developing your business idea in a rigorous manner so that by the end of the course, you not only have a strong piece of academic research, but you will also be well equipped to launch your business if this is your intended next step. The project is nominally 600 hours (60 CATS points) of learning, mainly taking place during the Spring and Summer terms. You will be expected to engage regularly with your Project Supervisor or Coach and to provide progress updates and drafts of your work to an agreed schedule.


Class sizes

The typical intake for this course is around 100 students, with most modules being delivered in smaller classes of 25-30.


Typical contact hours

Module delivery patterns vary, but most will be delivered in a short learning block of up to 4 weeks, allowing your focus to be on one module at a time. Each module nominally accounts for 150 hours, which includes scheduled classroom time and online sessions as well as your independent study and assessments.

WMG runs a SPA module (Study, Professional and Analytical Skills) designed to meet the complex learning and professional needs of postgraduate students. This is a blended module delivered throughout the year alongside your modules. Whilst it is an unaccredited module for IAE students, your participation in the lectures, workshops and online sessions is strongly encouraged. There may be occasions where you will be required to attend evening or weekend sessions.


Assessment

This course uses a variety of assessment methods across modules. These may include reports (both topic based and reflective), essays, individual and group presentations, critical evaluation or commentary pieces, case study exercises, simulation reports, business or consultancy reports, online tests, and video presentations.

Assessments have been designed not only to assess your achievement in meeting the course learning outcomes in an academically sound manner, but also contribute to preparing you with the requisite competencies required for employment.

For the research component, you will undertake a major project, which will develop your research and analytical skills. Project submission is likely to include both a written and a presentation element, accounting for 33% of your overall academic grade.

Your timetable

Core modules will be allocated to students at the end of the first week of term - you will then be able to view your individual module schedule for the rest of the year via the WMG module selection system.

Your elective modules will be bookable through the same system later in the term.

Modules will include scheduled classroom time and online sessions as well as your independent study and assessments, and will usually be delivered within a 4 week timeframe. Occasional classes and study skills sessions may be held at weekends or in the evenings.

As a Master's student, you are expected to manage your own time appropriately. On average, you are expected to commit 38-40 hours of study each week, in order to successfully achieve your Master’s degree.

This is a full-time postgraduate course - undergraduate term dates do not apply. Whilst there are no holidays as such, there will be no teaching scheduled when the University is officially closed for staff, during the two weeks over Christmas and New Year.

Innovation and Entrepreneurship graduates will often start their own business, and we’ve seen graduates become successful in a wide range of sectors including: food and drink, music, business consultancy, digital education, oil and gas, outsourcing, fashion, textiles, luxury goods and jewellery, logistics, and finance. Others go on to create new divisions and ventures for their family business, or start work in sectors in which they plan to later launch their business.

Visiting WMG

Tuition fees

Tuition fees are payable for each year of your course at the start of the academic year, or at the start of your course, if later. Academic fees cover the cost of tuition, examinations and registration and some student amenities.

Fee Status Guidance

We carry out an initial fee status assessment based on the information you provide in your application. Students will be classified as Home or Overseas fee status. Your fee status determines tuition fees, and what financial support and scholarships may be available. If you receive an offer, your fee status will be clearly stated alongside the tuition fee information.

* - Dissertations and Assignments are only submitted digitally. However students may wish to print and bind their dissertation for their own purposes. Students on some courses will have a final poster presentation as part of their project and the printing of posters will be at the students’ expense.
