Course overview

Develop the skills behind tomorrow’s diagnostics.

From earlier detection to more personalised treatment, the future of healthcare needs professionals who can harness the power of technology and data. On our course, you’ll learn to understand and apply the latest advances in diagnostics, medical imaging, AI and machine learning. Combining scientific knowledge with practical skills, you’ll build the digital healthcare expertise in demand across the pharmaceutical industry, clinical trial units, health services and beyond.

I am keen to work in healthcare and the DDDH course was an exciting opportunity to apply my Engineering Bachelor's degree to an emerging area of technology that gives me the skills and potential to make a difference in this area. Through the course I have had the opportunity to go to conferences and connect with local NHS staff, this has helped me build my network and feel prepared to enter the workplace after graduation.

Modules

Develop the knowledge and technical skills to contribute to the next generation of healthcare technology.

  • Diagnostic technologies: explore the principles and applications of established and cutting-edge imaging and diagnostics
  • Data and AI in healthcare: understand how data science, AI and machine learning are improving healthcare delivery
  • Specialist pathways: deepen your knowledge through dedicated subject-specific modules
  • Interdisciplinary knowledge: combine engineering, medicine and digital innovation

Core modules cover AI and machine learning for diagnostics, modern approaches to diagnostics, computational intelligence in biomedical engineering, and operation management and clinical system improvement. Choosing the Medical Diagnostics pathway allows students with an interest in those specific areas to further specialise by undertaking two additional subject-specific core modules in translational biomedical research and diagnostics, and medical device: design, maintenance and assessment.

Optional modules allow the selection of complementary topics of particular interest to the student.

A collaborative group research project, which parallels the way that diagnostics and imaging experts work in industry, will allow students to integrate their knowledge and understanding in order to solve a problem.

Students will also complete an individual research project in their chosen area of specialism.

Fees and scholarships

Tuition fees are payable for each year of your course at the start of the academic year, or at the start of your course, if later. Academic fees cover the cost of tuition, examinations and assessment and some student amenities.
