Come and visit the beautiful University of Warwick campus and find out about our Arts departments and courses at our 2021 Open Days

There are 3 autumn 2021 in person Open Days for prospective students to come and visit the University of Warwick campus: 9 October, 23 October and 6 November. The 6 November is particularly focused on the Arts and Humanities, but if you cannot make the 6th you are very welcome to come on the other dates. Our new Arts building (FAB) is reaching completion and we hope to be able to offer tours on the 6th November.

We will have staff and students from our Arts departments available to answer questions at the Information Fairs on the 9th and 23rd October. On the 6th November we are planning a mixture of subject-based drop-ins, workshops and presentations.

Virtual Open Days with academic presentations about the courses are being held in the week 25-29 October 2021.

Booking has opened and we look forward to seeing you either in person or virtually.

On Thursday, 12 November 2020 the University celebrated completing the final storey of the new Faculty of Arts Building with a “topping out” ceremony.

Hear from Dr Eris Williams Reed (Classics and Ancient History) about her work on the history of the Roman Near East and ancient communities’ interaction with the environment. Eris looks for expressions of environmental loss and ecological grief in the Safaitic inscriptions of Northern Arabia and uncovers the precarious, volatile and fragile relationship that some people in the ancient world had with their environment.

Then&Now is a student led-research project run by students in the Faculty of Arts in collaboration with the Modern Records Centre. Find out more about the project here.

A significant marker in the construction of the new Faculty of Arts Building. The commencement of demolition of the old Car Park 7. On Tuesday 8 May, representatives from the contractors Bowmer and Kirkland joined Alastair Dixon from the Estates Office and Diana Stonefield, the Director of Administration for the Faculty of Arts, to mark the start of the demolition of Car Park 7. The new Faculty of Arts building will be constructed on the site of Car Park 7 and is anticipated to be completed by 2021.

New scientific analysis of the composition of Roman denarii has brought fresh understanding to a financial crisis mentioned by the Roman statesman and writer Marcus Tullius Cicero in his essay on moral leadership, De Officiis.

Professor Kevin Butcher explains the context: “In the years after 91 BC the Roman state was in danger of becoming bankrupt. The Romans were at war with their own allies in Italy, and by the conclusion of the war, in 89 BC, there was a debt crisis.

By 86 BC there appears to have been a crisis of confidence in the currency, too. Cicero related how the Roman tribunes approached the college of praetors to resolve the crisis, before Gratidianus claimed sole credit for the collective effort.

“One theory is that Gratidianus fixed the exchange rate between the silver denarius and the bronze as (which had only recently been reduced in weight). Another is that he published a method for detecting fake denarii, and so restored faith in the coinage.
