In this second of our weekly Faculty of Arts at Home films, Professor Rachel Moseley (Film and Television Studies/Centre for Television History) explores the role that television has played in informing, educating and entertaining us about the domestic arts (cooking, sewing, home decoration, etc.). Rachel looks at the way the lines between public and private space have become blurred during the Covid-19 crisis and how we might make sense of this through television studies.

New Faculty of Arts building artwork commission. Can you spare 10 minutes to talk to artist Matthew Raw and to express your feelings and plans about the move of the Arts and Humanities departments into the new building? A significant marker in the construction of the new Faculty of Arts Building. The commencement of demolition of the old Car Park 7. On Tuesday 8 May, representatives from the contractors Bowmer and Kirkland joined Alastair Dixon from the Estates Office and Diana Stonefield, the Director of Administration for the Faculty of Arts, to mark the start of the demolition of Car Park 7. The new Faculty of Arts building will be constructed on the site of Car Park 7 and is anticipated to be completed by 2021.

Mika Watkins studied English Literature at Warwick, before going on to create and executive-produce the hit YouTube premium series Origin. Her writing credits include Guillermo del Toro’s Netflix horror series Cabinet Of Curiosities; Stan Lee’s Lucky Man on Sky 1; and BBC1 period drama Troy: Fall of a City.

Mika will return to the English Department next Wednesday, 1^st February to share her experiences in the TV and film industries with current Arts Faculty students. 

Students from Film and TV, History, and the School of Modern Languages have started to support a new and exciting programme to help Widening Participation students in our local area. From late February to mid-May student’s from the Faculty of Arts will be providing weekly academic support mentoring in schools across Coventry and Warwickshire. Over a 100 school children will be supported with their GCSE and A Levels, alongside their homework and information about university. The small group mentoring will then culminate in a celebratory visit to campus for all the mentees.

Our latest Faculty of Arts at Home film ties in with the Resonate Festival, the University of Warwick’s year-long programme of events for City of Culture, and its focus on Community throughout the month of July. Kat Pearson (PhD Student in Film and Television Studies) introduces her research into UK Cities of Culture and television, and the role that the television archive plays in placemaking. Kat discusses how she worked with the Media Archive for Central England’s collection of historic television to curate screenings of footage of Foleshill for community members, and to produce a film reel about Coventry’s architecture and public art for the Metropolis exhibition which opened in the city this month. She also discusses her role in the production of BBC4’s documentary ‘Coventry Cathedral: Building for New Britain’.
