Faye Chung Underwood
Hello there! I am an academic Tutor here at Warwick, where I teach across game design, automata theory, and writing. I first joined the university as an undergraduate computer scientist in 2020, later completing an MA in writing while teaching part-time in DCS. I joined as a full-time member of teaching staff in 2025.
You can often find me moseying about the labs, procrastinating my thesis in 3.11, or sipping my sixth cup of coffee in the staff room whilst marking.
Teaching
As of 25/26, I am a coursework lead or co-organiser for the following:
- CS276: Principles of Video Game Development
- CS258: Database Systems
- CS143-15: Logic and Automata
- CS133: Professional Skills (PDP only)
I have served as a lab/seminar tutor for a variety of modules, including CS118, CS126, CS132, CS133, CS143, MA117, CS258, CS276.
I also supervise URSS and Third-Year projects. If you have a project idea in mind (particularly if it focuses on game design, compiler theory, or any other of my research/teaching areas), please feel free to get in touch!
Research & Interests
I am currently completing my PhD in Computer Science & Literary Practice, supervised by the wonderful Dr Alex Dixon and Dr Gonzalo Garcia. My thesis takes a practice-driven approach to cross-disciplinary research, exploring ludonarrative design and game narratives.
Outside academia, I write poetry and essays. My work has been shortlisted for the Breadfruit Queer Writers Feature Prize and appears in The Page Gallery, Tales from Tarot, Breadfruit Magazine, and other journals.
