Mini-masterclass

As a new training initiative we are trialling mini-masterclasses. These are short sessions meant to refresh or deepen (not replace!) the individual microscope training, hands-on and in small groups. They are available for existing users who are trained on the microscopes. Data processing-focussed masterclasses are available for people who have collected or are in the process of collecting the relevant type of data. Current topic ideas are as follows, but other ones can be arranged depending on demand. Please use the interest form to register your interest for these masterclasses and we will arrange them to suit the people interested.

Practical
  • Ethane - plunge freezing and ethane condensation.
  • RT holders - Room temperature holders, insertion and removal
  • Focus and defocus - how to focus your sample, what does good focus look like,
  • 626 cryo holder - inserting samples in the 626 cryo-holder and putting it in the microscope
  • 914 cryo holder - inserting samples in the 914 cryo holder and putting it in the microscope
  • Microscope shutdown - shutting down the 2100 or 2200.
  • Microscope startup - starting the 2100
  • MDS setup - setting up the low-dose settings for manual image collection
  • Cryo-tomography - setting up tomograms in SerialEM
  • Montages - collecting montages of resin sections in SerialEM
  • MicroED - Electron diffraction of nanocrystals (proteins and small molecule)
  • Microtome - resin sectioning
Software
  • Etomo - processing for tomography
  • Montage stitching - combining montage stacks into
  • Micro-ED processing - processing of MicroED datasets
  • Relion - processing of single-particle data
