Warwick Doctoral Access- Sanctuary Scholarship
By accepting the Doctoral Access Scholarship- Sanctuary, award holders are agreeing to the Terms and Conditions below and are bound by the Funded PGR Student Policy. Scholars should read the Funded PGR Student Policy alongside the Terms and Conditions listed below.
1.1
The Doctoral Access Scholarship- Sanctuary is normally awarded for up to 4 years of full-time doctoral study and normally includes the payment of both academic fees and a maintenance grant to the award-holder. Funding is not retrospective.
1.2
The University’s decision over fee status will be final. By accepting the award, you are confirming that you accept your assigned fee status and are not aware of any evidence that might alter this classification. If you do not disclose such evidence and the University becomes aware of it at a later date, your Doctoral Access Scholarship- Sanctuary award may be revoked.
1.3
The award of the Doctoral Access Scholarship- Sanctuary is made only to individuals who:
- Be any nationality and hold one of the following statuses as granted by the UK government and/or be supported by the Council for At-Risk Academics (CARA):
- Refugee Status
- Asylum Seeker
- Definite Leave to Remain as a result of an asylum seeker application
- Limited Leave to Remain as a result of an asylum seeker application
- Humanitarian protection as a result of an asylum seeker application
- Included as a dependent (spouse/child) on an application for asylum. Spouses/civil partners must have been the spouse/civil partner on the date on which the asylum application was made. Children/step-children must have been aged under 18 on the date on which the asylum application was made.
- Be of any nationality and be displaced inside their own country or have had to leave their home country because of armed conflict.
- Be of any nationality and be at serious risk of, or the victim of discrimination, persecution, suffering or violence on account of race, religion, nationality, membership of a particular social group or political opinion.
- Be of any nationality and be a Current PGRs at the University at serious risk of disruption to studies as a consequence of current violent conflict or significant political unrest in home countries.
By accepting the award you are confirming that you hold one of the statuses above and are not aware of any evidence that might alter this classification for the duration of your scholarship. You should disclose any such information regarding a change in status to the Doctoral College immediately, noting that your Doctoral Access Scholarship- Sanctuary award may be revoked or cease with immediate effect.
1.4
Payment of academic fees for the Doctoral Access Scholarship- Sanctuary.
Payment of the maintenance grant is set at the prevailing UKRI rate.
Payment of a Researcher Training Support Grant (RTSG) is set at £5,000.
1.5
Awards for Doctoral Access Scholarship- Sanctuary in 2024/25 are ordinarily expected to begin on 30 September 2024. The award of the Warwick Research Sanctuary Scholarship may be deferred up until 30 December 2024 with prior permissions from the Doctoral College and your department. Deferral up to 30 March 2025 will be allowed in exceptional circumstances with prior permission from the Chair of the Board of Graduate Studies and your department.

The Doctoral Access Scholarship- Sanctuary is subject to awardees retaining the right to study in the UK. Awardees who have been granted limited leave to remain such as refugee or discretionary leave, where it expires before the course end date, will be required to present evidence to prove an in-time application to extend visa has been submitted, or have obtained new immigration permission in order to continue your studies. Awardees will be required to inform the University whenever circumstances change which affect the right to study, for example, if bail conditions changes to include a ‘no study’ restriction, or, if all appeal rights have been exhausted and are required to leave the UK. Our Compliance team will be making periodic check with the Home Office UKVI to ascertain right to study for asylum seekers.
1.7
Accommodation fees are not directly covered by the Doctoral Access Scholarship- Sanctuary. The stipend is intended to be a contribution towards living expenses.
1.8
Doctoral Access Scholarship- Sanctuary award-holders are expected to be registered full-time and be based at the University throughout their course of study. Any requests to spend part of the period of study away from the University must conform with the conditions set out in the ‘Guidelines on the Supervision of Research Students based away from the University’.
1.9
The Doctoral Access Scholarship- Sanctuary award-holder is expected to participate periodically in a range of postgraduate recruitment and community focused activities, which might include postgraduate open days; induction events; focus groups; receptions held with potential sponsors or alumni, student talks etc.
