Course overview

Harness the power of genomics, diagnostics and digital innovation to transform healthcare.

Explore how genomics is transforming healthcare, from diagnosing and treating disease to advancing personalised medicine and biomedical research. Develop the scientific knowledge, analytical skills and critical perspective to translate genomic discoveries into clinical practice and research.

You’ll explore human genetics and genomic technologies, including next generation sequencing and molecular diagnostics, while developing your ability to generate and analyse genomic data, evaluate complex information and design research projects. You’ll also build transferable skills in communication, problem-solving, digital literacy and project management, preparing you to work across clinical, research and policy environments.

Whether you’re looking to advance your career, move into genomics or apply your existing STEM or healthcare background to this growing field, you’ll gain the expertise to contribute to advances in research, personalised medicine and patient care at the University of Warwick’s School of Life Sciences, where 90% of research was rated world-leading or internationally excellent in REF 2021.

Modules

You’ll develop a strong practical and theoretical understanding of genomics, molecular biology and modern diagnostic technologies.

  • In-depth genomic expertise: explore genetic variation, molecular disease mechanisms and the role of diagnostics in precision and integrated healthcare
  • Clinical and professional insight: apply genomic counselling, molecular diagnostics, prenatal and newborn screening in patient-centred care, while considering ethical, legal and social factors
  • Research and innovation: analyse complex biomedical datasets, critically evaluate evidence and conduct independent research, developing innovative solutions to healthcare and clinical science challenges

Note that information found by following the links to the module catalogue is subject to change for future years of study, as we evolve our courses in response to the latest developments in academia and industry.

Teaching and learning

You’ll combine academic study with research-led and clinically focused learning.

  • Blended learning: learn through face-to-face teaching, interactive online resources, lectures, tutorials, seminars, journal clubs and presentations
  • Real-world experience: gain insight into professional research and healthcare environments through clinical experience and visits to research and clinical facilities
  • Collaborative learning: work on projects with peers and engage in interdisciplinary learning that reflects real-world research and clinical practice
  • Applied skills: develop analytical, quantitative, communication, teamwork, numeracy and digital skills by applying biomedical concepts to authentic research and clinical challenges
