Dimitri Veras

I am an astrophysicist who researches the contents of planetary systems (including our own solar system) in a wide variety of contexts, across both time and space. I have published academic articles about forming, destroying and evolving planets, asteroids, moons and comets while they interact with their parent star or stars.

You can view (or listen toLink opens in a new window) some media attention regarding different aspects of my work from BBC NewsLink opens in a new window, BBC Sky at Night MagazineLink opens in a new window, BBC Science FocusLink opens in a new window, The IndependentLink opens in a new window, National Geographic 1Link opens in a new window, National Geographic 2Link opens in a new window, The Conversation 1Link opens in a new window, The Conversation 2Link opens in a new window, ForbesLink opens in a new window, Physics TodayLink opens in a new window, New Scientist 1Link opens in a new window, New Scientist 2Link opens in a new window, New Scientist 3Link opens in a new window, Huffington PostLink opens in a new window, Universe TodayLink opens in a new window, Astronomy NowLink opens in a new window, The Daily MailLink opens in a new window, and USA TodayLink opens in a new window.

My most significant current research focus is on the **future and fate** of extrasolar asteroids, comets, moons and planets: how they traverse the violent giant branch stellar evolution phases and "pollute" these stars after they become "white dwarfs". The Sun will become a giant branch star and then white dwarf, and might very well be polluted by asteroids, comets or even planets such as the Earth!

I am a senior version of an Associate Professor, formally known in the UK as a "Reader", working in the exoplanet, white dwarf, disc-based and space satellites/astrodynamics research groups here at the University of Warwick; my current PhD student is Rafael Martinez-BrunnerLink opens in a new window. I am also a member of the University of Warwick's Centre for Exoplanets and HabitabilityLink opens in a new window and the University of Warwick's Centre for Space Domain AwarenessLink opens in a new window. My biography includes postdoctoral research appointments at the University of CambridgeLink opens in a new window and University of FloridaLink opens in a new window. I obtained my PhD at the University of Colorado at BoulderLink opens in a new window, and my Bachelor's degree at Yale UniversityLink opens in a new window.

Prospective PhD students:

----For topics related to the physical, dynamical or chemical properties of asteroids, planets or discs orbiting violent giant branch stars and white dwarfs, I currently am not able to fund any more PhD students. However, I always welcome interest from those who are able to self-fund their PhDs. Please note that these projects are simulation-based, theory-based and analytics-based; see my papers below before getting in touch at [dimitri.veras (at) aya.yale.edu].

In addition to research, I have a keen interest in maps, and have created an Astronomy Map of the WorldLink opens in a new window containing 745 institutes, as well as a map of the UK Astronomical SocietiesLink opens in a new window.

Please click on the titles of the papers below to obtain pre-published drafts. Highlights include three invited review papers that help summarize the field of exoplanetary system fates covering: (1) all aspects of the evolution and delivery of rocky extra-solar materials to white dwarfsLink opens in a new window up until 2024, (2) all aspects of planetary systems around white dwarfsLink opens in a new window up until 2021, and (3) all theoretical work on giant branch, white dwarf and pulsar planetary systemsLink opens in a new window up until 2016.
