Sexism in schools

Under the Public Sector Equality Duty schools have a legal duty to eliminate sexual harassment and sex discrimination and to ensure that all young people can enjoy learning free from the fear of bullying. However, despite this legal obligation, schools remain a site where sexism is experienced and sexist attitudes develop. Over the past two years, UK Feminista has delivered workshops to young people and teachers in schools and colleges across the UK. This work has identified a gap in the training and support available to equip school staff and students with the tools to end sexism in school.

This research project is designed to provide evidence and insight into the prevalence of sexism in both primary and secondary schools across the UK, with a particular focus on sexual harassment, sexist language and gender stereotyping. The research project will enable UK Feminista and the NUT to develop recommendations for key stakeholders, including OFSTED, the Department for Education and local authorities, and the findings will be disseminated in the form of a national report.
